Calgary Stampede, Midway Rides

Calgary Stampede, Midway Rides

For many in Calgary it might be a little early to start planning their Stampede activities, but for the many volunteers the work on this year’s stampede started last September. The schedule of events that will take place down at the grounds is jam-packed with activities. The midway will be filled with rides, this is one of my favourite places to visit.

This year the parade will be exiting, Astronaut Chis Hadfield will be Parade Marshall, and parade morning is always exciting. about 350,000 people line the parade route, and the parade is two hours long, one of my favourite days of the year!   So with all this thought about Stampede I am exploring some of the old images taken in previous years and planning my visit to the stampede this year!

One Billion Rising, a world-wide even to end violence against women. In Calgary we danced at the TD Square downtown. Check out their website.  Get involved to stop the violence against women.

I have posted this image as part of Jakesprinter’s Sunday Post. His word this week is “Unforgettable”  I am hope the worldwide  ”One Billion Rising” event will become an unforgettable annual event, and that violence against women and children can be stopped. Ile de cite, Paris France and the image that inspired it

Ile de la cite, Paris France, and the evening river cruises

I am a big fan of Henri Cartier-Bresson, there is so much to be learned from studying the work of someone you admire. While most of us do not want to just copy someone else’s work, there are lessons to be learned by walking through the process the photographer  might have used to capture an image.  I believe that as much as you might try to copy someone’s work that our equipment, the processes that are available to us, our skill level and our personalities will all show in the images and separate your work from the original.

Take this image for example, the original inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson taken in 1952 would be difficult to copy today, yes with Photoshop it could be accomplished, but what is to be gained by that, except well, to improve or show off your Photoshop skills.  I have my own memories of Paris.  Memories of  Paris of today, with the river cruises, the grey skies, the yellow and orange leaves of autumn. This is the Paris I want to capture in my images. But I did pick this spot to take picture not just because it was beautiful but because I had seen Henri Cartier-Bresson’s images, and loved it. I purposefully choose early evening because I wanted to show some of the city lights, and I choose a slow shutter speed to show how the River Seine is now a very busy place.

So while my image was inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson it is quite different, and meets my objectives for the images.

jillian on the move

ImageImage

one final post with Jillian, who was so amazing to work with, she was game to try just about anything!  We were trying to get a little movement.. Let me tell you, getting the right part of the face in focus, with the right depth of field, and great expressions is easier said then done.  Jillian was perfect, stayed in just the right spot, tried to keep her expression with just a slight smile, and then tossed and tossed her hair with the patience of a professional! She has such beautiful eyes it is really hard to notice anything else, and that helps the images.

False Creek, Vancouver BC, reflections of high rise towers at sunset.

Water Reflections False Creek Vancouver BC, motion and zooming.

I have been concentrating on portraits for a while, and trying to get caught up processing all the portraits sessions I have been doing, so today I thought I would spend a couple of minutes and bring you something a little different.  A couple of months ago we were visiting Vancouver BC, staying in an apartment booked through VROB (vacation rentals by owner) a great site I highly recommend. One evening we went down for a short walk and to watch the sunset. I wanted to take some long exposures of the water and rocks. After using several different exposure lengths to  see the effects the different times had on the water, I decided to do a few shots zooming my telephoto lens while the shutter was open.

Here you can see the high-rise buildings of downtown Vancouver, with the sunset behind, their reflection on the water. It has a smoky fire effect, rather than water and reflection.  In the bottom of the frame you can see how the rocks have change position, both from right to left and in a vertical line pointing into the frame.  you can see my original image Water and Rocks

Water and Rocks, Motion Movement and Contemplation

there are times when you need to let go of everything and to contemplate….  Water Poon

While in Vancouver we had time to visit the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Chinese Garden again, as I have said before it is a favorite place to spend a quiet morning.  The cultural center was hosting a display of the art, and poetry of Water Poon.   This image reminds me of his words, and I find it easy to sit quite, at least for a few minutes when I can watch the waves wash around the rocks, there is something in the quiet motion that is almost hypnotizing, that allows me to let go a find the stillness. The light and shadows across the water, ripples of waves. This image was taken using a slow shutter speed, blurring the water and emphasizing the light and shadows of the waves.

While it isn’t quite as good as sitting by the sea for a quite moment, I can now look at the photo and be reminded of the moments we had by the sea, and of  Water Poon’s words.

Jamaican Bobsled and the big ride down the track!

Riding down the Jamaican Bobsled at Mistic Mountain, Jamaica, what a way to start the day! This is straight from the camera!  It was about a 5 minute ride, one person in each of the bobsleds, so I had one hand on my camera and one had on the brake, okay I wasn’t always holding onto the brake, but my camera was secure!

Tango Lessons, Central Park, NYC

From June until September you can learn Tango in Central Park, NYC.  Every Saturday at 6 pm a group gathers to dance, to demonstrate and to teach those who are interested.  It was amazing to watch, and if I hadn’t been busy taking pictures I might have joined in the lesson.  To watch the dancers weave their way around the cobblestone square was magic.

Wishing for warmer shores

Waikiki sunset……

It has been a cold weekend, and while I have heard the tempetures will be better during the week, it is just the beginning of winter.  Two things I am sure of, first there will be plenty more cold days ahead, and second it would be nice to watch the sunset someplace warm, Waikiki would do nicely.

For this photo I used a long shutter speed and a little movement to create an abstract landscape image.
