Great fun to watch young and old skating around, the Christmas Market only a few feet away, lots of room to stand and watch. This looked like a temporary set up, about 1 foot off the ground, all the workings for the artificial ice below, parked not too far away an ATV fitted with ice cleaning equipment just like a mini Zamboni.

The challenge with this photo, a long exposure for the low light , combined with a flash to catch the skaters moving around. With just the long exposure the skaters that were moving disappeared from the image. It took several images to get one that i liked, but I figured this one wasn’t too bad. This is a large area for the flash to handle, draining power quickly in the cold,  I was using a rear shutter sync, catching the action at the end of the exposure, rather than the beginning, this affects the “ghosting” in the image.

let me know if you think it was a success or if you have any tips.

  1. Very nice image under tough conditions. I assume you had a tripod, the stationary objects looked rock solid and I’m guess you had it at f/16 given the star effect on the lights. Rear Curtain was the right way to go on the flash. These shots involve a lot of luck because you are dependent on what the skaters decide to do. Can’t offer much advice (will be curious to see what others say) except perhaps to try some with a longer exposure time and hope a skater is a little closer when the flash goes off.

    • Hi Rboin, thanks for input, I did have a tripod, essential for this type of work, and I am getting better at actually using it! the image was shot at f18 2.5 sec. I think next time I give this a try I might have a skater with me, then I can give some direction, and some consistent results with the people who are moving. but it was a fun way to show some of the activities at the Christmas market, not all shopping and sipping mulled wine!
